The UF Comprehensive Vein Center

The VNUS Closure® System

The Closure® System (Fig. 1, below) was developed to treat superficial venous reflux in a less invasive way compared to conventional vein stripping.

This technology uses a very small catheter and radiofrequency energy to ablate, or seal shut, the abnormal veins. The surgeon inserts the treatment catheter under ultrasound guidance through a needle into the saphenous vein on the inner part of the leg. The catheter is then positioned near the groin, energized and withdrawn, treating the vein down to the knee. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with mild sedation and patients return home the same day. There are no stitches, and most patients return to normal activity within 1-2 days. Like other procedures, radiofrequency ablation involves risks and potential complications.

Specific complications reported in medical literature include numbness or tingling (paresthesia), skin burns, blood clots and temporary tenderness in the treated limb. All patients should consult their primary doctor to determine whether or not they are fit for this, or any procedure, and if their medical conditions present any special risks.
