What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are dilated, protruding or visible veins usually occurring in the lower legs. According to the National Institutes of Health, about 25 million Americans are affected by varicose veins, most commonly appearing in people aged 30 to 70.  They are more common in women and will affect 72 percent of women and 42 percent of men by the age of 60.

Varicose veins can cause leg pain, swelling and fatigue, and can significantly impact quality of life. Although commonly thought to be a cosmetic concern, varicose veins can be a sign of more serious problems such as "leaky valves" or blockages in the venous system, referred to as venous insufficiency.

What does the UF Vein Center offer?

The UF Comprehensive Vein Center offers thorough evaluation combining both physical examination and comprehensive diagnostic ultrasound. Without thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment, most patients will experience repeat cases of varicose veins and are at risk for more severe problems such as chronic leg swelling and skin ulcers.

Compression stockings are the mainstay of treatment; however, when surgery is necessary, new minimally invasive treatments are available. The VNUS Closure® System uses radiofrequency energy to seal shut abnormal veins via a percutaneous outpatient procedure. Other treatments offered by the UF Comprehensive Vein Center include: conventional open surgical vein ligation and stripping, ambulatory phlebectomy (removal of varicose veins), sclerotherapy (injection treatments) and laser treatment.
