Endovascular Treatment of Carotid Occlusive Disease

The mainstay of treatment for symptomatic and asymptomatic stenosis of the carotid arteries has been carotid endarterectomy. More recently percutaneous balloon angioplasty and stent placement of the carotid artery has been introduced as a rapidly evolving investigational treatment option in a select subset of patients with extracranial carotid stenosis. University of Florida is one of a handful of medical centers participating in an FDA-sponsored prospective clinical trial that is designed to determine the safety and efficacy of this new procedure for the prevention of stroke and death as compared to surgical carotid endarterectomy.
