Overview

The Division of Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at the University of Florida provides internationally recognized care in the complex areas of abdominal organ transplantation (kidney, liver and pancreas) and hepatobiliary surgery (surgery of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas).

   Transplantation

Our excellent success rates are only one of the reasons patients come to Shands at the University of Florida for transplantation. Another is our reputation for providing highly personalized patient care and for educating patients, families, case managers and referring physicians about follow-up care, which is crucial to the survival of the transplanted organs. These qualities draw transplant patients from throughout the Southeast and make us one of the United States’ top 20 transplant centers for all organs and a Center of Excellence.

Dr. William Pfaff performed the first kidney transplant in the state of Florida at Shands at UF in June 1966. Since then bone marrow (1981), heart (1985), liver (1990), lung (1994), pancreas (1995) and heart-lung (1996) transplant programs have been added.
