Cardiac and Lung Transplantation Program

The division's physicians perform 40-50 human heart transplants and 40-50 human lung transplants each year. The Cardiac Transplantation Program works as a team, with active involvement from cardiothoracic surgery, transplantation, immunology, cardiology, pulmonary, and pathology, as well as support from clinical psychology, social services, chaplain services, nursing personnel, and dietary services. This team concept has fostered excellence in patient care, as well as a diverse and active academic research program on both the clinical and basic science levels. Transplantation-related clinical specialties include:

·Ventricular assist devices: multiple types of devices used as a bridge to transplantation and recovery of the heart, as well as destination therapy

·Pediatric and infant heart transplantation: the only program in Florida approved by the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services for pediatric heart transplantation
