Overview

Faculty members in the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery offer a wide range of surgical procedures, including congenital, traumatic, infectious, and other acquired diseases of the chest. The focus of the division is generally on the heart and the great vessels of the chest and non-cardiac thoracic conditions involving the lungs, esophagus and mediastinum. The goal of the division is to provide complete surgical care for disease of the chest and to fully support the patient population and referring physicians in the Southeast.

This vision is ubiquitous amongst all members of our faculty. We are committed to exemplifying the highest quality standards for TCV surgery.

Last year alone, over 1000 major cardiac and thoracic procedures were performed at Shands at UF and the Malcom Randal Gainesville Veterans Administration Hospital. Along with providing traditional cardiothoracic surgical services, the division is a major referral center for complex thoracic aortic surgery, complicated valve, re-operative, and pediatric cardiac surgery.

This division is also committed to evaluating and providing the latest surgical technology including "off-pump" coronary bypass surgery, stent grafts for thoracic aortic aneurysms, and the latest in ventricular assist devices for patients with end-stage heart failure. Shands is one of only four transplant centers in the state and performed 34 heart and 19 lung transplants last year, making it the 16th busiest center for heart and lung transplantation in the country.

Throughout its clinical, educational and research efforts, the division is committed to ensuring that patients are treated with the utmost expertise, surgical skill, and compassion. These strong vales, held up by our faculty, are conveyed to our residents and students which assures that patients are treated with the most up-to-date procedures in a setting of compassionate care.
