Scholarly Activity Requirements for Surgery Residents
Please note: these requirements are
NOT FINALIZED and are under review by both faculty and
residents. If you have any questions or comments
about these requirements, please direct them to the Vice Chairman
for Research, Lyle L.
Moldawer, PhD.
In collaboration with a faculty research mentor, residents are required to
conduct a hypothesis-driven research project suitable for peer-review.
In a prospective or a retrospective study, all residents
must:
- Define a research hypothesis
- Develop and implement a methodology
- Collect and analyze data
- Interpret findings
- Prepare and submit a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal
- Requirements for Manuscript: Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Conclusions, Summary, References, and Tables/Figures.
- Present the findings at a public forum (Department of Surgery Research Day, or a regional or national meeting)

Additional options ONLY for residents completing residency in 2005 or 2006:
- A surgical case report submitted for peer-review
- A chapter for a textbook
- A review for a peer-reviewed journal
A SHORT PROGRESS REPORT IS DUE AT THE END OF THE THIRD
YEAR. ALL RESEARCH MUST BE COMPLETED BY MARCH 31 OF THE FINAL YEAR.
Deviations from these requirements will necessitate approval from the
Department of Surgery Research Advisory
Committee.
