Pediatric Surgery Fellowship Training Program

From the Director of the Fellowship Program:

Welcome to the University of Florida Pediatric Surgery Fellowship Training Program.  We are honored to be the first accredited Fellowship Program in Florida. It is a two-year educational program that includes all aspects of pediatric surgery.  In the first year, fellows will spend 3-6 months on electives which may include neonatology, critical care, cardiothoracic surgery, and research. The second year will be spent as the chief resident of the pediatric surgery service.

The Division of Pediatric Surgery was established in 1967 under the leadership of James L. Talbert, M.D., after his arrival from John Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Talbert established a renowned regional program which is now led by Dr. David Kays. Our division has four full-time surgeons, excellent clinical & research programs and a significant educational focus.

In addition to the traditional realms in pediatric surgery, highlights of our program include special expertise in minimal invasive techniques, neonatal surgery (in particular, congenital diaphragmatic hernia), ECMO, burn and trauma care, and oncologic surgery. We have active and productive basic and clinical research programs and fellows are encouraged to participate.

Applications are accepted through ERAS and unless specified, we participate in the match through the NRMP.  Applicants must have completed training in an ACGME accredited residency in general surgery.

Gainesville is a terrific place to live with wonderful opportunities for your family.  There are excellent schools and the college environment is stimulating and fun. We welcome queries and would be delighted to answer any questions.
