Symptoms: You receive an NDR (Non Delivery Receipt) similar to below indicating “User Unknown” when replying to a message received from or sending to department staff after your mailbox has been moved to the new server. Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: Bounced Email Sent: 12/27/2007 6:19 PM The following recipient(s) could not be reached: Department,Member on 12/27/2007 6:19 PM The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or contact the recipient directly to find out the correct address. <srg-exchange.ad.ufl.edu #5.1.1 smtp;550 5.1.1 User unknown> Cause: Symptoms generally occur when: Replying to a message received while on the old mail server. Using an address from a ‘Contact’ created for a department member. This is a result of the move and how messages are transferred between mailboxes in the same mail system. Every mailbox in the system is identified to the users with a Display Name. The Display Name is what you see in the To: and From: fields when sending and receiving messages. Mailboxes are identified to the mail system and computer by a Security Identifier. When mailboxes are created on the new system they receive an entirely new Security Identifier. When the contents of the old mailbox is imported into the new system there will be references to the old Security Identifiers. You see the Display Name but the computer is still referencing the old Security Identifier. Again this will only involve messages delivered within our mail system. Resolution: To resolve the reply issue, resend the message using the address book or Check Name feature to select the person to whom the message is being delivered. To resolve the contact issue entries will need to be individually edited. |
