Overview

The Division of General Surgery consists of 20 surgeons who treat a broad array of diseases including benign and malignant gastrointestinal and breast/skin/soft tissue/endocrine diseases, as well as burns and trauma injuries. The faculty in the division are specialty trained in surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, hand surgery, burn surgery, trauma surgery or critical care. Expertise in complex gastrointestinal, pancreatic, biliary and cancer surgery is a long-standing tradition of the division. Highly trained specialists in minimally invasive surgery have enhanced the surgical approaches to these diseases. 

Clinical Specialties

The division seeks to provide the highest quality care by combining clinical interests into service lines that manage patients' needs in a multidisciplinary effort with surgical and medical colleagues. Furthermore, evidenced-based clinical pathways provide a foundation for uniform clinical care of patients realizing that many patients have unique needs. The division is organized in six organ-based service lines that offer surgical care of benign and malignant diseases.

Research Programs

The faculty is dedicated to providing not only high-quality clinical care but also advancing research in their respective fields. The division has multiple areas of basic science and clinical investigation, many of which are funded by the National Institutes of Health and other extramural agencies. Research laboratories include:
