Training Opportunities |
The Woodward Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery offers a one-year, industry-funded training program that focuses on the acquisition of surgical decision-making, perioperative and operative care of patients with complex gastrointestinal surgery problems. This training position provides the challenge of caring for the most complex patients requiring GI surgery, be it open or laparoscopic surgery. We aim to educate the trainee in the total care of patients with complex GI diseases and will utilize both open and laparoscopic surgical approaches. The training program is tailored to the needs of the trainee but strives to offer broad-based care in pancreatic surgery, advanced laparoscopy including pancreatic resection, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, adrenalectomy, splenectomy, and gastric resection. This position holds the appointment of clinical instructor and as such teaching responsibilities to the medical students and residents is an expectation. In addition, because trainees have finished their general surgery residency, independence is a significant feature of the program. Fellows should take call in the general surgery faculty rotation and independently consult on patients with GI diseases. Clinical research is also a core component of this training program. |
