Emina Huang, M.D., associate professor of surgery, is
conducting research in the emerging field of colon cancer stem
cells and regenerative medicine. This area focuses on examining
markers located on or inside cells to identify specific cells
that must be killed to prohibit future cancer recurrence. Like
other stem cells they are versatile, regenerative and resistant,
so they are hard to destroy. She also is conducting research in
the area of inflammation, a known risk factor for cancer
development. Patients who have long- term Inflammatory Bowel
Disease have up to a five-fold increase in colon cancer
incidence.
